History of Zychlin’s Jewish Community

The community of Zychlin was first mentioned in a document from 1332. It gained city status in 1450 as a private aristocratic city. In 1764/65, there were 311 Jews living in Zychlin. The community’s first synagogue was constructed in 1780, and about one hundred years later was replaced by a stone building. Throughout most of the 1800s, Jewish families made up more than half of the town’s population. The Jewish community had a vibrant religious life, and political, social and athletic organizations flourished in the early 20th Century. In 1939, there were approximately 2,800 Jews in Zychlin. Of the Jews who lived in Zychlin at the outbreak of the war, only 68 survived. READ MORE
